WordPress developer in Sudbury, Suffolk

I'm Christopher Douglas, a WordPress developer based near Sudbury on the Suffolk and Essex border. I build, fix and look after WordPress websites for businesses, charities and trade bodies across Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, and I work with organisations further afield too.

I work on my own, so the person you meet at the first consultation is the person who writes your code, answers your emails and fixes problems when they come up. I’ve worked in web development, branding and design for over 30 years, and with WordPress for more than 20 of them.

What I do

  • Bespoke WordPress site builds, each with a custom theme written for your organisation
  • Custom development, including plugins and integrations with the systems you already use
  • Fixing slow, broken or out-of-date WordPress sites
  • SEO and AI search work, so Google and AI tools such as Perplexity and ChatGPT understand who you are and where you work
  • Care, support and retainers for sites I’ve built and sites I haven’t
  • Training for the people who update your website
  • AI automation with n8n, taking repetitive manual work such as email sorting and data entry off your team

How I build WordPress sites

Every site I build uses a custom theme written for the project. I don’t use page builders such as Elementor or Divi, and I don’t start from an off-the-shelf theme.

Your team edits content through clearly labelled fields built with Advanced Custom Fields, rather than a drag-and-drop layout tool where one wrong move breaks a page. I keep plugins to the ones the site needs, because every extra plugin adds weight, updates and security risk.

WooCommerce and online shops

I build and support WooCommerce shops, although e-commerce isn’t my specialist area. A membership shop, event ticketing or a modest product range sits well within what I do.

If a large, high-volume online store is the main part of your business, a specialist e-commerce developer will serve you better, and I’ll tell you so at the first conversation.

Prices

I publish starting prices so you know where you stand before you get in touch.

  • Site builds: from £1,200, with a fixed quote after a free consultation
  • Custom development: quoted per project
  • SEO and AI search: audits £695, SEO care from £75 a month
  • Care, support and retainers: from £75 a month, with no lock-in
  • Training: £150 per session

Every quote sets out in writing what’s included and what isn’t, before any work starts.

If you’re comparing WordPress agencies in Sudbury

Sudbury and the surrounding towns have several good WordPress agencies, and some projects suit an agency better than a single developer. If you want design, marketing, print and web handled by one team under one roof, an agency is the sensible choice.

Working with me differs in a few practical ways. You deal with me from the first call through to launch and afterwards, with no account manager passing messages between you and a developer you never meet.

You own your website outright, including the theme, the custom code, the content, the domain and the hosting account. Care and support plans run month to month, with no long contracts.

My overheads are lower than an agency’s, so you pay for the work and for direct access to the person doing the work, rather than for office space and layers of management. The standard of work matches what you’d expect from a good agency.

Where I work

I work with organisations across Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, including Sudbury, Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Colchester, Braintree, Halstead, Hadleigh and Long Melford. Most projects run remotely, with face-to-face meetings in Sudbury and the surrounding towns when they help.

I also work with organisations elsewhere in the UK.

Who I work with

I work best with businesses of 10 or more employees, charities and trade bodies. Sole traders and businesses with only a few staff are usually better served elsewhere, and I’d rather say so now than after a consultation.

Questions people ask before hiring a WordPress developer

Who owns the website and the code?

You do. The theme, custom code, content and design files belong to your organisation, and I set up the domain and hosting in your name.

Who holds the plugin licences?

Premium plugin licences are registered to your organisation, so they stay with you if you ever change developer.

Will another developer be able to take over the site?

Yes. I build with standard WordPress tools and document the custom code, so any competent WordPress developer will pick the site up without starting again. I’ll hand over everything they need.

Do you use page builders like Elementor?

No. Every site I build has a custom theme, with Advanced Custom Fields for editing.

Do I have to sign a long contract for support?

No. Care and support plans start from £75 a month and run month to month, and you stop whenever you choose.

Do you build online shops?

Yes, with WooCommerce. E-commerce isn’t my specialist area, so I’m a good fit for shops alongside your main website and the wrong fit for a large, high-volume store.

Do you work outside Suffolk?

Yes. Most of my work runs remotely, so I work with organisations across the UK.

How do I get started?

Book a free consultation. I’ll ask about your organisation, what the website needs to do and your timescale, then send you a fixed quote.
